Surprising Senses Experiment

Big Ben's Ringing Bells

Materials you will need:

• A wire clothes hanger
• 2-3 feet of String/Thread

Steps:

1.  Cut a piece of string around the length of 24– 36 inches/61– 91 cm/2-3 feet)
2.  Thread the string to go through the wire coat hanger while keeping hold of both end of the string.
3.  Hold the ends of the string in each hand.
4.  Using your fingers position each end of string just in front of your ears with the string resting against your face. You may find it easier if you wrap both ends of string around each index/pointer finger.
5.  Keeping a good grip of the string carefully walk around and allow the wire coat hanger to knock against  a few different objects and listen for the ringing bells of Big Ben to reach your ears..

The sound of ringing bells travels up the string/thread to your ears by vibrations.

Note: Be careful not to swing the wire coat hanger to hard.

Isn’t it amazing how sound travels?

Take this experiment outside where you can have more space a the freedom from worrying about knocking things over in your house.
