This can be a very messy experiment and therefore you may want
to conduct this experiment on a protected surface or outside on
a nice day.
Steps:
- Pour in around 12 oz. of water into your measuring jug and
then pour into a small see through container (bigger than your
hand).
- Spoon a heaped tablespoon of the borax powder into the water.
- Optional – put in a couple of drops of the food coloring
of your choice.
- Stir this mixture to dissolve the borax powder until it becomes
a white and cloudy solution.
- Let this solution sit until the water becomes clear and a
bit of un-dissolved borax powder is at the bottom of your container.
- Slowly pour about 2 tablespoons of the PVA glue into the water
solution.
- You should see a stringy blob of plastic matter floating in
the water solution.
- Grab as much of the blob (with your hand) as you can and take
it out of the solution. Be warned that this blob is going to
be very gooey, slimy and slippery.
- Gently squeeze, roll and transfer the blob from one hand to
the other. While transferring the blob from hand to hand it will
become less slippery. At this point you may want to put it and
your hands under some running tap water and then continue squeezing
the blob from hand to hand.
- Continue until the blob becomes blubber and starts to form
a ball shape.
- You can try throwing your ball against a flat surface to see
what happens.
Does this remind you of the movie ‘Blubber’?
