See, Taste, Feel, Hear and Smell
How do we see things, taste things, feel things, hear things
and smell things? Try a few of these fun and simple experiments to
investigate how our five senses work.
Good observers use all their senses - not just their eyes. Observing
your surroundings is an important skill in science as it helps
you to be scientific. Using our eyes and our ears helps us to
make sense of the world around us and they also help us to learn about
science.
Children should be curious about the things that they observe and
explore in the world around them using all their senses.
Eyes & Ears - Our eyes use light energy and our ears use sound energy. Working
together they help us to recognise friends and to warn us of danger.
Taste - Our tongue can detect only four basic flavors.
1. Sweet - detected at the tip of your tongue
2. Salty - detected at the front sides of your tongue
3. Sour - detected along the rear sides of your tongue
4. Bitter - detected across the back of your tongue
See, Feel and Hear Vibrations – When something vibrates or
shakes very, very quickly, it makes the air around it vibrate as
well.
Also, sounds make vibrations that you can feel and sometimes
see.
We hear a sound when vibrations travel to our ears.
Vibrations can be reflected (bounce back) like light.
Try closing your eyes and eat some Doritos. What senses are
you using?
