Kids Science Experiments - Magic Color Breakdown

Absorption Science Experiment

Magic Color Breakdown

Materials you will need:

Water
Blotting paper (letter size or smaller)
Baking sheet (small) or a dish with an edge
4-5 different colored markers (felt tip pens)

This is a color changing experiment!

Steps:

    1. Fill the baking sheet or dish with water.
    2. Lay your blotting paper so that it is horizontal or landscape.
    3. Draw or color a circle about half an inch to an inch at the bottom of the paper. Leave about an inch from the bottom edge of the paper not marked with your marker. Do this with each of your 4-5 colors of markers/pens.
    4. Hold the top end of your paper up with one hand and place the bottom edge of the paper into the water (making sure that the colored lines do not touch the water).
    5. Hold the paper there for a few minutes so that the blotting paper can absorb the water.
    6. Keep an eye on the circles that you colored to see what happens as the water travels up the blotting paper and reaches your markings.

How many different colors can you see? You may think that your marker is green, but when you see the break down you can actually see the different colors that make up the color green.

NOTE: Blotting paper works best on this experiment. You can usually find this paper at a stationery shop.
