1. Fill the baking sheet or dish with water.
2. Lay your blotting paper so that it is horizontal
or landscape.
3. Draw or color a circle about half
an inch to an inch at the bottom of the paper. Leave about
an inch from the bottom edge of the paper not marked with your
marker. Do this with each of your 4-5 colors of markers/pens.

Hold the top end of your paper up with one hand and place the
bottom edge of the paper into the water (making sure that the
colored lines do not touch the water).
5. Hold the paper there for a few minutes so that
the blotting paper can absorb the water.
6. Keep an eye on the circles that you colored to
see what happens as the water travels up the blotting
paper and reaches your markings.
How many different colors can you see? You may think
that your marker is green, but when you see the break down you
can actually see the different colors that make up the color
green.
NOTE: Blotting paper works best on this experiment. You
can usually find this paper at a stationery shop.
