Starting & Stopping Experiment

Dropping Orange

 

Materials you will need:

• Orange
• Coffee Mug
• Matchbox Cover
• Postcard or Index Card

Steps:

1.  Place the postcard (index card) on top of the coffee mug.
2.  Position the matchbox cover in the center of the card.
3.  Balance the orange on top of the matchbox.
4.  Quickly pull the card away.

What happened to the orange?  The orange drops into the coffee mug.  Because the orange is heavy, it drops into the mug and because the card and matchbox cover are light they gather speed and move away.
