Surprising Senses Experiment

Funnel Heartbeat

Materials you will need:

Tape
• Tracing Paper
•Plastic Funnel
•Plastic tube (close fit to narrow end of funnel and long enough to reach from your chest to your ear)

Steps:

1. Position the tracing paper to cover the wide end of the funnel and tape it in place so that there are no openings.
2.  Place the plastic tube over the other end of the funnel. Tape in place if necessary and so that there are no openings or gaps for sound or air to pass through.
3.  Position the wide end of the funnel on your chest just over your heart and place the other end (tubing) close to your ear.

What can you hear? Can your count your heartbeats?  This is similar to a stethoscope that a doctor uses to listen to your heartbeat.
