Kids Science Experiments - Hose Pipe Rainbow

Curious Colors Experiment

Make a Water Hose Rainbow

Materials you will need:

• A Sunny Day
• Running Hose Pipe

This is a great experiment to do outside on a hot sunny day.  It is very easy and the only things needed are a garden hose pipe with running water on a bright sunny day.  This is also lots of fun for the children.

Steps:

1.  Stand with your back to the Sun.
2.  Spray water from the hose pipe.  (Place your thumb over the hole at the end of the hose to get a spraying effect).
3.  Watch the spray against a dark background (grass, hedge or a wall).

Can you see the different colors?  Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet make up the colours of a rainbow.  Light bends and slows down as it goes through water.  Each colour of light bends at different angles, therefore you can see each color separately.
