Kids Science Experiments - Parachute Madness

Parachute Fun

Design a Fun Parachute

Materials you will need:

String
Plastic army man (soft stuffed animal)
Scissors
A ruler
A bandana or a square piece of plastic (no holes)

Have fun making a parachute and see if you can get it to travel down to the ground without crashing.  You can have races with friends to see who can design the best parachute. Try using different objects from around the house to make a parachute that glides smoothly through the air and doesn't crash on landing from the pull of gravity.

Steps:

1. Tie a knot in each of the four corners of your bandana, a hanky or piece of square plastic sheet.  See what material makes the best canopy for a parachute.
2. Cut four pieces of string around 12 inches long.
3. Tie one strand of string to each of the four corners of your parachute by making a knot.
4. Take the four ends of the string and tie them in a knot at the bottom leaving a bit of string so that you can attach your army man or washer in the center.
5.  Tie the army man or stuffed animal at the center knot withthe extra string.
6.  Take hold of your parachute by gripping the center area of the parachute canopy and hold it high above your head and drop it from this height.

How did your parachute travel down to the ground?  Did it crash or did it have a smooth landing.   If it had a successful landing try dropping it from a higher height.  Have some fun with your friends and make it a race to see who can get their parachute to make a smooth landing.
