• A Ticking Watch
• A Cardboard Tube (Paper Towel Tube)
Steps:
1. Hold the watch next to your ear.
2. Move it away until you cannot hear the ticking.
3. How far do you have to move it?
4. Place one end of the tube against your ear.
5. Place the face of the watch at the other end of the tube.
6. Can you hear the ticking?
When the sound vibrations are trapped in the tube they
do not lose much energy. So you can hear the watch ticking through
the tube. When the watch is away from your ear, the sound vibrations
spread out and lose energy. This is why you don’t hear
the watch ticking.
