• Water
• A real compass • A small flat bar magnet • A shallow bowl or pie pan •A thin piece of wood (for magnet to rest on)
Steps:
1. Fill the bowl or pie
pan with water.
2. Place the magnet on top of
the piece of wood and place them in the center of the bowl of
water.
3. Once the wood and magnet
stop moving, check the direction the magnet is pointing with
your compass by placing in on the table next to your bowl of
water.
This tells you the direction of the North Pole and theSouth
Pole.
Our spinning Earth is like a giant magnet. The center of
the Earth is a liquid iron and as the Earth spins, it makes the
iron act like a magnet with a North Pole and a South Pole.
